Why local SEO matters when your customers are in Louisville

Someone searches “AC repair near me” at 9 p.m. Three businesses show up on the map. One of them gets the call. We work on getting you onto that short list.

That short list has a name: the Map Pack. It's the block of three listings Google puts under the map when it decides a search has a local answer. Roofers, HVAC companies, restaurants, dentists. If somebody types a service with a town in it, or just “near me,” a map is often the first thing they see.

On a phone, the trip from that map to a phone call is one tap. A Louisville July doesn't wait for office hours, and nobody scrolls to page two while the upstairs gets hotter. They call the first name that looks real.

So local SEO is less about winning a keyword and more about being one of three names on a small screen when a neighbor needs what you do.

What people actually type

Some type the service and the town. Some type the service and “near me.” Plenty type just the service, and the phone fills in where they're standing. Google reads all three as local. That's why a business can show up for a search that never mentions its name or its town.

How Google picks who goes on the map

Google has said local results come down to three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Here's what each one means for a business owner.

  • Relevance is how well your listing matches what the person typed. Your main category, your services and the words on your website all feed it.
  • Distance is how far you are from the searcher, or from the place they named. You can't move your shop, so this one's mostly out of your hands.
  • Prominence is how well-known you look. Reviews, mentions around the web and a website that's clearly about what you do all count.

Two places to show up

There are two spots to win. The map listings are the first. Under them sit the ordinary website results, and those are where your pages come in. A strong listing with a weak website gets you looked at and then passed over. A strong website with a messy listing never gets seen. You want both pointing the same way.

That's why two businesses on the same street can show up differently. It's also why most of the work is plain on purpose: a correct category, a name, address and phone that match everywhere, pages that say what you do and where, and reviews from real customers.

What we do

  • Local SEO services: getting your business found when people nearby search for what you do. That means your website pages, your directory listings, and a name, address and phone that match everywhere.
  • Google Business Profile optimization: the listing that shows on the map. We check the categories, services, hours, photos and posts, and fix what's wrong or missing.
  • Local website design: plain sites for local businesses that work on a phone and are built to get a call.
  • Lead generation for contractors such as roofers and HVAC companies.
  • Reviews: helping you ask real customers and reply to what they write.

Not sure which one you need? Call and tell us what you do and what town you're in. We'll say what fits, even if it's none of them. There's more detail on the local SEO services page.

Who it's for

Small and mid-sized local businesses that get customers from people nearby. Contractors, including roofers and HVAC companies, who mostly want the phone to ring.

Local SEO fits when you work in a set area, people call or walk in after they search, and you can describe what you do in a short phrase. It's the wrong tool for a store that ships nationwide and has no local customers. If that's you, we'll say so.

Roofers and HVAC companies share an odd problem. Their busiest days come from the weather, not from marketing. A hail storm or a week of heat sends a pile of searches at once, and the company already sitting on the map gets first look. The listing needs to be in shape before the storm, not after. Other trade? Call and tell us what you do.

Then somebody has to pick up

Getting found is half of it. The other half is what happens when the phone rings. A caller who hits voicemail on a hot afternoon will try the next name on the map, and that name is a few inches away on the screen. Answer when you can. Call back fast when you can't. No marketing company can fix that part for you, and the best listing in town won't hide it.

Signs it's time to call

  • You can't remember the last time you looked at your Google listing.
  • You've moved, changed numbers or renamed the business.
  • Your website was built before you knew what you wanted it to do.
  • You search for your own trade in your own town and can't find yourself.
  • Someone told you they almost didn't call because they couldn't tell if you were open.

One of those is enough. You don't need all five.

How it starts

  1. You call and tell us about the business.
  2. We look up your main service in your town, the way a customer would, and see where you show up.
  3. We tell you what we'd work on first.
  4. You decide. If it's not a fit, you keep what we found.

Step two is worth a word. Looking it up the way a customer would means a phone, a plain search like “roofer near me,” and the town you actually work in. Your own computer, signed in to your own account, shows you a friendlier picture than a stranger gets.

When we look at how you show up, we check the things a customer or Google would: your categories, services, hours, photos and posts, your website pages, your directory listings, and whether your name, address and phone match everywhere.

Step three is a short list, not a binder. We'd rather say “fix your main category and your phone number first” than hand you forty pages you'll never open.

How long does local SEO take?

It depends on what's broken. A wrong phone number or the wrong main category can be fixed quickly, and Google tends to pick up those edits within days or weeks. A site that never mentions the town, or a listing with three reviews, takes longer. A crowded search, like a trade where a dozen companies all want the same three spots, takes longer still.

Anyone who gives you an exact date is guessing. We won't. What we can do is tell you what we'd change first and why.

Local SEO or paid ads?

People ask. Paid ads put you at the top the moment you pay and drop you the moment you stop. Local SEO is slower to start, and a good listing and a clear website keep working while you're on a job. Plenty of businesses use both.

Paid ads aren't one of the services here. We stick to the five above, and if ads would suit you better, we'll say so on the call.

A ten-minute self-check you can do today

Before you hire anyone, including us, look at what a customer sees. Grab your phone.

  1. Search your main service plus your town. Who's in the three map listings? Are you?
  2. Search your own business name. Is the name, phone number, hours and website button right?
  3. Check your main category. “Roofing contractor” beats a vague “Contractor.”
  4. Read your last few reviews. Did anyone reply, good or bad?
  5. Call the number on your listing from a different phone. Does it ring where you want it to?
  6. Open your website on that same phone. Can you find the phone number without pinching and zooming?

Fix whatever you can. If something looks off and you'd rather hand it over, you know the number.

Common mistakes that keep a business off the map

  • An old phone number or address still sitting on a directory from before a move.
  • A second listing for the same business, usually left over from a name change.
  • The wrong main category, or one so broad that Google can't tell what you sell.
  • Hours that don't match the real ones, especially around holidays.
  • A website with one page called “Services” and no mention of the town.
  • Reviews nobody answers. Buying fake ones is worse. Google takes them down, and a customer can spot them.

None of that is fancy. Most of it is a Tuesday afternoon of cleanup, and it's the first place we'd look.

How pricing works

We talk through pricing on the call. No prices are posted on this site, so if cost is your first question, make it your first question. You'll also find the pricing notes on the services page.

What we won't promise

A #1 spot. Nobody controls Google's results, so we don't promise a position. Results shift with where the searcher is standing and what they typed, and Google changes how it works without telling anyone.

If a company does promise you first place, ask how. We don't buy reviews and we don't pick who gets asked for one, either. That's a shortcut, and it tends to come back on you.

Red flags in any local SEO pitch

  • A promised position, or a promised date for one.
  • A “secret method” they can't describe in plain words.
  • Reviews offered for sale.
  • A report full of numbers that never mentions phone calls.
  • A request to move your listing into an account you don't control.

Hold us to the same list.

Questions people ask about local SEO in Louisville

What is local SEO?

It's the work of showing up when someone searches for what you do and means a place near them. That covers the map listings at the top, your Google Business Profile, the pages on your website, your listings on other sites, and your reviews.

How is local SEO different from regular SEO?

Regular SEO tries to rank a page for a topic, anywhere. Local SEO ranks a business for a search tied to a location. Distance and your listing matter a lot more, and the map usually comes before the website.

How long does local SEO take?

Fixing a wrong category or phone number can show up within days or weeks. Building a stronger site and more real reviews takes longer, and a crowded search takes longer still. Anyone who gives you an exact date is guessing.

Can you get me to number one on Google?

We don't promise a position. Nobody controls Google's results, and they change with where the searcher is and what they typed. We work on the things that are in your hands and tell you straight what's moving.

Do I need a Google Business Profile?

If customers are nearby and you want the map, yes. It's the listing that shows your hours, phone number, photos and reviews. If you already have one, it often needs cleanup more than it needs replacing.

Do you only work with contractors?

No. We work with small and mid-sized local businesses. Contractors, including roofers and HVAC companies, who mostly want the phone to ring, are a good fit too. Call and tell us what you do.

What does it cost?

We talk through pricing on the call. There are no prices on this site, so if cost is the first thing you want to know, ask it first.

What should I have ready when I call?

Your business name, what you do, the town you work in, and your website address if you have one. Don't worry if you're missing some of it. Call anyway.

Where we work

We work with businesses around the Louisville area. Tell us your town when you call and we'll go from there.
